Youtube Tagging Explained (Introduction)

Title:

The title of your YouTube video is obvious, here you’re going to want to place the most relevant keywords of your video. Keep it short and sweet however, as most people will skip over long titles and head straight for the one that hits their need in the heart. Remember that the average attention span of an internet surfer is measured in a handful of seconds.

Description:

The description of your YouTube video plays a key role in the viewer’s selection of your video more so than the actual SEO and keyword tagging. Yes, YouTube will grab keywords from your description to match a search query but you should not under any circumstances stuff this section with keywords in an attempt to catch extra searches. I see a lot of people stuff keywords over and over in their description not knowing that this hurts you more than it helps you.

Tags:

This is where you want to unleash those money making keywords. You do not need to repeat any keywords that have already been used in your title. This is like laying tile down twice, it’s irrelevant and not needed. Here are some quick tips for your Tags section.

  • Place the most important and relevant keywords in the Tags section to pinpoint your audience (after all what good is a ton of views if they’re not your audience).
  • For critical key terms, you can reiterate phrasing. Example: How to, tag, tagging, YouTube, videos. Notice how the term “tagging” is also in there. Yes, if someone were to write tagging, your “tag” term would still come up but by adding “tagging” in there you seal search queries.
  • Don’t over do it! There is no need to stuff keywords in here either. The more accurate and succinct the better!

Conclusion:

The following is to help set up and optimize your video for YouTube’s searches. Realize that just because you’ve set up your tags, doesn’t mean you’ll be at the top of the search queries immediately. The order in which you come up on search terms is based heavily upon your Views and Ratings, which is another story all together.
